Week 1

Module Overview:

This module will develop learners with an aptitude for chemical product design. It will require the learners to conceive and design a chemical product. You will make use of a series of tools and techniques to identify the problem statement, ideate possible solutions and evaluate ideas in order to produce preliminary product design specifications for the chemical product. In addition, the module is infused with key CDIO skills and attributes such as teamwork, communication and creative thinking.

On the first day, we learned about what chemical product and chemical product design is.

Chemical Products means products manufactured, processed, sold, or distributed by the Company that are chemical substances, or that contain or are comprised of chemical substances, preparations or mixtures of chemical substances, including but not limited to inks, cleaning solvents, maintenance fluids and media coatings; but excluding raw materials that are embedded in the Company’s printers. Chemical process design is the choice and sequencing of units for desired physical and/or chemical transformation of materials.

The process by which chemical products are designed and developed is known as chemical product design.

Today was the day where our team is formed, Team 5. It consists of Kevan, Kerwin and Jessica. Following on, we also decide our roles where we have decided.

We went out of the class to team bond with each other for a few minutes, Kerwin then wanted to buy some breakfast so we decided to go to the food court. While Kerwin was enjoying his meal, we had a very hearty discussion and took a selfie. Overall, it felt that we had bonded after this short but fun bonding session.

Team formation:

Team Leader: Kerwin

Scriber: Kevan

Photographer, Time Keeper: Jessica

Roles

Responsibility

Leader

-Delegating tasks to team members.

-monitors the quantitative and qualitative achievements of the team

-provide direction and guidance to team members

scriber

-note down all important information

Photographer, time keeper

-creates memories and make special moments unforgettable by taking photo.

-remind team members the time remaining for the due date of the assignment or work.

In terms of Tuckman's Theory, the 5 necessary and inevitable phases in team formation is Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and Adjourning.

Forming: Team acquaints and establishes ground rules. Formalities are preserved and members are treated as strangers.

Storming: Members start to communicate their feelings but still view themselves as individuals rather than part of the team. They resist control by group leaders and show hostility.

Norming: People feel part of the team and realize that they can achieve work if they accept other viewpoints.

Performing: The team works in an open and trusting atmosphere where flexibility is the key and hierarchy is of little importance.

Adjourning: The team conducts an assessment of the year and implements a plan for transitioning roles and recognizing members' contributions.

Our group is still in the forming stages and we are still somewhat strangers, so we have to work ourselves to become a dynamic team that everyone can agree on.

Activity: Chemical Products and Principles

The chemical products can be divided into four categories which are commodities, chemical devices, molecular products, and micro-structured products.

During the activity section, we were asked to research on a chemical product. So, chemical device is a miniature process which accomplish a particular chemical transformation and can provide convenience to us humans. We discussed thoroughly and decided

Broad Category: Household

Sub-Category: Appliances

We thus decided on a chemical product which is an air fryer. In an air fryer, air gets heated up by a heating element in the air fryer, producing a convection current where it involves heating and cooling. The hot air heated from the bottom of the air fryer near to the heating element causes it to be less dense and flow upwards, it then comes in contact with the food, heating it up. At the same time, the air gets cooled due to heat transfer, it then gets denser and heavier thus dropping to the bottom of the air fryer and gets heated up again. Thus a convection current is produced.

This air fryer is categorized as an appliance and a household chemical product as it is a necessity for most families as it is used to prepare food without the use of oil. Which is somewhat essentially healthier. It is an appliance as it is used in a house therefore this chemical product is categorized in this categories.

Basics of blogging:

Who: A blog is done by usually an individual or a small group of people. In this case, the blog is done by the three of us, namely Kerwin, Jessica and Kevan.

What: A blog is a website or journal created online to present information. The contents of a blog normally consist of one's views, findings and  When content is added to the blog, they are called 'entries' or 'blog posts'. The content is normally presented in an order where the latest one is seen first, then following to the oldest at the end.

Where: A blog can be done online with certain sites such as blogger.com where we can use the free templates provided, or we could create our own website, with our own designed template.

When: Blog posts can be added and edited anytime we want. Whenever we need to add information, we can do it at our own free online. This makes blogging and note taking simple without the need of organization at one go.

Why: Blogging allows us to present information with our own creative freedom. Blogging is one of the best ways to do so as we are able to keep recorded information, write personal reflections, and discuss topics at hand anytime we want to.

How: One blogging method that works for us is prompting by asking questions, such as what do we need to present, how can we present it, what information do we have or need to find. This method allows us to thoroughly go through the topics structurally.

Reflections:

We learned a lot during our first lesson, first we learned a new theory which is Tuckman's Theory. It makes us understand how our group functions, we also encountered many different problems at different stages, this gave us the courage and the mentality to face the challenges. Documentation is also an important learning point as it gave us the information needed to visualize and memorize through documentation throughout the lesson.
